HERITAGE mEETS STILLNESS
On the rugged cliffs of Achill Island, where the Atlantic carves time into stone, a sanctuary of absolute tranquility has emerged. "The Zen Ruin" is more than a renovation-it is a dialogue between generations.
The original, unpolished stone walls of the ruin provide a protective frame for an architecture that seamlessly blends Japanese minimalism
with Scandinavian warmth.
Through expansive glass fronts and an open-roof concept featuring a visible timber structure, the raw nature of Ireland becomes an integral part of the interior. Polished concrete floors and custom wood slats create an atmosphere of purist elegance, while the infinity pool fluidly dissolves the boundary between architecture and the ocean.
It is a project that demonstrates that true beauty lies in the balance between decay and renewal.
The architectural design is defined by a harmonious tension between historic substance and modern intervention. A new gable roof, constructed from oak beams and a continuous glass ridge, has been placed atop the ruin's original stone walls.
The gable end facing the pool was opened with a central glass facade, providing a direct path to the terrace and mirroring the design language of the fireplace area on the opposite side.
A minimalist glass corridor acts as a transparent bridge, physically connecting the ruin to the new addition-a monolithic concrete cube. This cube features floor-to-ceiling glass fronts in the bedrooms, protected by adjustable wooden louvers. These slats provide privacy while actively regulating light and shadow to ensure an optimal indoor climate.
THE HEART
Housed within the high-volume stone ruin, the living room is defined by a sunken concrete lounge area that creates an intimate "conversation pit". The original chimney stack remains the focal point, now updated with a clean steel insert, while the timber gable roof and glass ridge flood the space with soft, cinematic light.
BEDROOM 1: OCEAN VIEW SANCTUARY
This bedroom offers an unobstructed view of the vast Atlantic Ocean. The architectural highlight is the floor-to-ceiling glass front that wraps around the corner, visually dissolving the boundaries between the interior and the coastal landscape. Adjustable wooden louvers, acting as a filter to regulate the indoor climate while creating an ever-changing play of light and shadow.
The interior follows a minimalist Japandi aesthetic, keeping the focus entirely on the meditative view and the serenity of the space.
BEDROOM 2: HIGHLAND RETREAT
Positioned at the rear of the concrete cube, the second bedroom offers a completely different but equally calming view of the rugged highlands of Achill Island. Here, the expansive glass front stretches across the entire width of the wall, bringing the mossy greens and monumental silence of the mountains directly to the bedside. Again, adjustable wooden louvers serve as a functional design element to tailor light intensity and climate. Designed as an absolute minimalist "Sleep Sanctuary".
Shared centrally between the bedrooms and the corridor, the bathroom is a windowless, meditative vault. Its defining feature is a precise "light carving" in the ceiling-a deep skylight that acts as a sun-cannon, casting a dramatic, moving spotlight onto the
monolithic stone tub and the micro-cement surfaces.
